Coffee brewing is full of what-if questions. What if I ground slightly finer? What if I poured differently? What if I switched brewer? CoffeeScope is an attempt to explore those questions through physics before brewing the next real cup.

In practice it's an interactive simulator: you change something (grind, temperature, flow, pressure, brewer shape, contact time) and watch how the brew responds. It isn't trying to replace recipes or experience. It's trying to become another tool for thinking about coffee.

It won't hand you the perfect recipe, and that's intentional. Coffee is too personal and too variable for that, which is part of the fun. The goal is simpler: compare possibilities, see the parts of a brew that are normally hidden, and form a decent hypothesis before you use up real beans testing it.

Why it exists

A small change in grind or temperature can noticeably change the cup, and the reason is usually hard to pin down. Brewing variables refuse to stay in their lanes: grind finer and you also change resistance, flow and contact time at once. We set the inputs, taste the result, and most of what happens in between stays invisible. Understanding those invisible processes doesn't replace experience. It helps build intuition.

That's why CoffeeScope models processes rather than recipes: one coherent physical model across different brewers, which is what makes meaningful comparisons possible. It's a way to ask better questions before the next cup: comparing configurations, spotting trade-offs, building a feel for flow, heat and extraction. It focuses on relative behaviour rather than claiming absolute truth, and the final cup still gets the last word.

What it can't do

CoffeeScope can't tell you which coffee tastes best. Taste is subjective, and coffee varies between origins, roasts and individual beans. The physics has to be simplified too, so parts of it are only approximations. The goal isn't perfect prediction. It's building useful intuition. When the model disagrees with your experience, that's often the interesting part: usually an assumption is wrong, or a better question is hiding underneath. Those assumptions and their limits are written down in the methodology rather than swept under the rug.

Built in the open

This could have been a personal project that lived on my own computer. Instead I built the infrastructure to share it from the beginning, because ideas get more interesting when other people can challenge them, question the assumptions and suggest better ones. That's why the accounts, the site and the deployment existed before most of the features did.

Modern AI tooling made a project this size realistic for one person, but the architecture, the assumptions, the validation, the physical models and the overall direction remain human decisions.

An open experiment

CoffeeScope is still changing. Models will get revised, some assumptions will turn out too simple, and feedback will push it in directions I haven't thought of yet. That uncertainty is the point.

I enjoy building things, and I enjoy them more once they're shared. If CoffeeScope sparks curiosity and turns out useful to others, I'll happily keep pouring evenings and weekends into it. And if not, it will still have been a very good excuse to learn, and to drink a lot of coffee thoughtfully. Either way, for home baristas, engineers, educators and anyone who likes asking why coffee behaves the way it does, the question stays open:

I'm Lasse. My background is applied physics, and I've spent my career building simulation software for complex systems. At some point I started wondering whether modern phones had quietly become fast enough to simulate a real brew, and whether one coherent physical model could describe many different brewers. That question refused to go away, and eventually it became CoffeeScope.

It's independently developed. No ads, no sponsored reviews, no gear I'm quietly selling you. Just the model, the measurements, and a project I'm building in the open with the people who use it. A fair number of pots went cold during development, in the name of research.
