How to read the map

One variable changes at a time

Both modes draw exactly the same marks in exactly the same places, at exactly the same sizes. Only the fill colour changes when you switch. That is the whole idea behind CoffeeScope: hold everything constant, move one thing, and see what it does.

Size is altitude, always

A mark's diameter tracks the midpoint of the region's typical growing band, from 300 m of lowland robusta to above 2,200 m. Higher-grown coffee is denser and slower to ripen, so altitude stays visible no matter which question you are asking.

The ring is a progress gauge

The arc around each mark sweeps clockwise from twelve o'clock. In origin mode it is progress through the current crop stage; in cup mode it is the in-season index — how fresh that origin's green is in the market you picked.

Why coffee has a season

Coffee is fruit. A tree flowers after rain, the cherry fills for six to nine months, and then it is picked over a window of weeks — not all at once. What follows is slower than most people expect: drying and resting in parchment, hulling and grading, a truck to the port, export paperwork, three to six weeks at sea, then discharge and customs before a roaster can buy a single bag.

Add it up and it is routinely four to six months from picking to landing. That lag is why an origin can be mid-harvest on the map and still have nothing fresh on the shelf where you live, and why a Kenyan lot that is exciting in Rotterdam in April is a different proposition in Tokyo. Cup mode makes that lag explicit for the market you choose.
